La technologie et l'identité

Our self-perception changes a lot with online presence: just ask our parents! Whether it be bullying (cyber-harcèlement), presence on social media (les reseaux sociaux), participation in online communities (communautés en ligne), or any other, technology and science behind it are giving newer generations more to learn, more to see, and more to experience.
Can you think of a way in which technology has impacted the way you see yourself? Science and experts believe that increase in use of technology can increase anxiety (l'anxiété) or problems with self-esteem (l'estime de soi). But everyone has different experiences, especially between different communities that interact with certain elements differently! For example, teenagers in the United States use Instagram more than French teenagers, but the Snapchat market in France is the second largest in the world!

Problems with Technology

Alienation (l'alienation) and harassment/bullying (harcèlement) are common problems with technology increases, especially for younger members of society. Using technology, especially with other people's contributions, can drastically affect one's identity or self-perception. Can you think about a time where you witnessed technology used in this way, where someone's identity or self-image was affected by their technology?

Possible Prompts:

Why do you think regulating usage of technology is important for our health/well-being?
Are you good at keeping a healthy relationship with technology? Why or why not?
How do you see your interaction with technology differently than a teenager in a Francophone country?
Talk about a time you witnessed a negative interaction on social media or online. What did it make you think?
What is your favorite thing about your technology/devices? Do you think a Francophone teenager would have the same answer?
